I wrote a letter to Charming Shoppes, Inc. a few days ago. Looking back, I could have added a lot more to my argument, but hindsight’s 20/20. Check it out. I think that it’s a relevant issue, considering how many women - including myself - shop at a store under the control of Charming Shoppes.
I’m a happy customer of Fashion Bug and Lane Bryant. I’m also a web publisher specializing in plus size fashion for women. One constant question that stays on my mind when it comes to all 3 stores that Charming Shoppes owns is: why don’t the 3 sites accept each other’s credit cards?
Perhaps there’s some business strategy or accounting principle behind it, but honestly? The customers don’t understand that. They only see that in order to enjoy additional sales, discounts, and loyalty perks, they will need a store card. Since all 3 stores are closely related, it seems there’s an implicit need to have all 3 store cards in the wallet. Loyal store visitors shouldn’t have to be subjected to this.
Your organization knows better than most that women’s plus size fashion is an emotionally-charged issue for women in this category. The idea that such loyal customers would need to go and get 3 separate credit cards - three vehicles of credit when 1 would suffice - is ludicrous.
I think Charming Shoppes would be better off in the long run coming out with a ‘one card’ approach - the Charm Card or what have you (I don’t handle branding, just user complaints!)
I know that’s my #1 frustration - I own a Lane Bryant credit card. I went into my local Fashion Bug store (St. Ann, MO) and found that if I had a Lane Bryant *gift card*, I could use it. However, my credit by the same name wasn’t good there.
I spend, on average, 120$ per visit - I want to be able to use my credit from one store to the next, provided that it’s under the same company. At the end of the day, it all shows up as ‘Charming Shoppes, Inc.’ on my credit card statement.
If we’re already using the Lane Bryant gift card at Fashion Bug (and I presume Catherine’s?), then why not the credit card too?

I work at Fashion Bug and we cannot take Lane Bryant or Catharine’s credit cards because of the way the numbers were set up… for example, the prefix of ALL fashion Bug cards starts 600466…. Lane Bryant and Catharine’s cards are set up with different prefixes. I asked my District manager why we couldn’t use the other CSI cards and she said that it’s because it would take too much money to get all new account numbers that would be compatiable in the other companies… and most customers don’t want a new account number, so it’s in everyone’s best interest to keep the three separate… gift cards are able to be used in all three stores though….

I work at fashion bug in ohio we do take other cards actually we just dont take their gift cards. I have rung up
a sale with a catherines card but not a lane bryant yet. thats weird that you all cant do it but i have no problem doing it.
